When I was drawing this, I learnt that lepers used to walk with bells to signal their presence and warn others of their arrival. As outcasts, they are under the watchful gaze of others. However, Francis’ ignites a light for them as he warmly embraces a leper as a brother, as well as enacts his own conversion into service for the sick. His renewed compassion becomes a bright light in the darkness as he confronts his bitterness and encounters the sweetness of God.
