San Damiano Friary is a parish community of friars involved in full-time ministry at the Church of St Mary of the Angels. The friars live and minister as a religious brotherhood, bearing witness to the Gospel message and vision of St Francis of Assisi.
‘San Damiano’
St Damian (or, in Italian, San Damiano) was a charitable physician and an early Christian martyr, who is a patron saint of healers and protector of children. In the small ruined chapel of San Damiano, outside of Assisi, St Francis first heard the call from the crucifix to rebuild God’s Church. In Singapore, San Damiano Friary was first established in Chestnut Drive in 1991, and subsequently moved into a planned monastery building behind the Church of St Mary of the Angels.
What We Do
Friars of San Damiano share the building with the pastoral, formation and communications staff of the St Mary of the Angels. In addition to the parish friars’ accommodation, this building also houses parish offices, a ‘chill-out’ zone for youth and young adults, and a study room. Parish staff and volunteers join the friars for community prayers and meals on weekdays.
The brothers of San Damiano serve together in corporate ministry, doing and using all that is needed to proclaim the Gospel – including modern expressions of pastoral care, information technology, collaborative ministry with professionals and laity, and investing in formation of staff and parishioners.
The community also creates and maintains liturgies and settings that enhance the experience of community and the encounter with God.

Holy Virgin Mary,
there is no one like you born in this world among women,
Daughter and Handmaid
of the Most High Sovereign King, the heavenly Father,
Mother of our Most Holy Lord Jesus Christ,
Spouse of the Holy Spirit.
Pray for us with St Michael the archangel,
and with all the powers of heaven and with all the saints,
and with your most holy beloved Son, Lord and Teacher.
